About St. Luke's Parish
December 1, 1728 is the true birthday of St. Luke's Parish, as enacted by the Maryland General Assembly. It took 140,000 pounds of tobacco to pay the costs of building the church. St. Luke's was constructed in Church Hill, and was completed and in use by early 1732. St. Andrew's Chapel, at first a simple wooden structure, was completed in June 1730. A history of the Parish through 2003 can be found in what is known to parishioners as "the Red Book," available for a small fee at the back of each church building.
Our Rector, Rev. Nanese Hawthorne
Rev. Nanese Hawthorne answered the call to St. Luke's Parish in 2006. She cheerfully perservered in her duties as the Rectory underwent some major renovations all around her.
Nanese was heavily involved in the activities of the Diocese of Delaware for most of her adult life, while fulfulling her career as a teacher/administrator. After completing her studies at the Virginia Theological Seminary, she was ordained and began her service as a Rector at a church in Pennsylvania.
Since coming to St. Luke's Parish, Rev. Nanese has helped implement many programs, both within the parish and in the outside community and surrounding area. Her level of energy seems unflagging, as she serves not only her parishioners, but takes on other commitments on the Diocesan level. We are blessed to have her spiritual leadership. Rev. Nanese can be reached at the office phone 410-556-6644 or via email at revnanese@yahoo.com.
Organist/Pianist May Harris
May Harris took the position of Organist in 2009, after the retirement of Dr. Amzie Parcell. May spent many practice hours getting to know both the electronic organ at St. Andrew's and the pipe organ at St. Luke's. Recently St. Luke's Church has added a piano as well, and now May utilizes both instruments in our worship music. May is a delightful addition to our liturgical parish life and we are thankful for her talents.
